Summary:
The Systems Technician will service, upgrade, maintain and conduct tests on telephone equipment, data and voice grade telephone circuits and equipment, VHF mobile and base communications systems, microwave communications systems, personal Computers, printers, CRT's and Computer Networking devices. In addition this position will act as back-up technical support and provide project services for SCADA RTU's, PLC's and other electronic monitoring and control equipment. This position is part of the Montello Technical Group.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Carries out assigned preventive maintenance duties and installation assignments.
- Performs periodic and emergency overhauls and reconditioning of equipment
- Provides regular verbal and written reports regarding the status of work and assists in the planning of both individual jobs and broad-based maintenance programs. Reviews major and time consuming repairs with advice and help from supervision.
- Uses and operates all pertinent safety equipment when performing duties in potentially hazardous areas. (Respirator, hard hat, safety glasses, etc.) Displays workmanship consistent with industry standards and company work practices.
- Works in accordance with underwriters and all other applicable codes and/or as indicated on engineering drawings and sketches and may be required to modify original design and layout work based on field inspections and general guidance from engineering.
- Investigates and diagnoses reported difficulties, making repairs and adjustments in order to restore equipment and facilities to proper operation.
- Uses spectrum analyzers, frequency and level meters, data analyzers and various other test equipment, measuring devices, hand and power tools.
- Directs and coordinates the restoration of telephone company circuit outages for minimum down time
- Recommends improvements to equipment and routine maintenance to enhance performance. Coordinates with appropriate supervisor regarding changes to or departure from existing installation and/or maintenance procedures and policies.
- Subject to 24 hour emergency call out to restore operations of pipeline facilities, system wide. Communicates with other technicians for assistance in effecting repairs when applicable.
- Interprets and works from drawings, plans and specifications relevant to the construction or alteration of associated Systems and equipment. Maintains current files of company and vendor drawings and specifications. Prepares as built and sketches from which permanent engineering drawings can be created or modified.
- Maintains a spare parts inventory sufficient to prevent lengthy service interruptions of communications facilities and equipment. Orders parts and repair materials as required.
- Responsible to help maintain safe and healthful working conditions by exercising sound judgement, and to comply with safety regulations and standards.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED
- Must have a minimum of Associate's degree in Electronic Technology or equivalent instrument experience.
- Incumbent normally works alone but at times is required to coordinate his/her work activities with other technicians to make repairs to electronic equipment. ·
- Should be familiar with basic functions of satellites for transmission of data, as well as understand normal telecom equipment.
- Must be able to investigate and diagnose reported difficulties; make repairs or adjustments to restore equipment and facilities to proper operation.
- Must be able to use various test equipment, measuring devices, standard hand tools, power tools, digital volt meters, network cabling, crimping, and testing equipment.
- Must have ability to perform periodic routine maintenance, facilitate overhauls, greenfield installations, and reconditioning of existing equipment including, but not limited to: RTUs (remote transmitter units), controllers, UPSs (un-interruptible power supplies), PLCs (programmable logic controllers), routers, switches, antennas, radios, camera systems, regulated power supplies, 24VDC and 120VAC systems.
- Will need to be comfortable working inside communication boxes and around low voltage electrical panels, using electronic tools and test equipment to troubleshoot control and supervisory equipment.
- Must have a good working knowledge of Windows PC operating systems, Microsoft suite, as well as IP networking.
- Must use and operate all pertinent safety equipment when performing duties (hard hat, safety glasses, etc.).
- Must be able to interpret, install and troubleshoot IT equipment, and make modifications/corrections to the equipment not limited to configuring and setting up new equipment to talk to the SCADA network.
- Must be able to perform the routine testing and execute documentation for safety checks at facilities using appropriate tools.
- May be requested to inspect or oversee the work of contract employees in the installation or maintenance of electronic equipment.
- As assigned, assists technicians in other disciplines with routine maintenance, repair and installation. In absence of appropriate craftsman, may be required to diagnose problems other than instrumentation in nature and perform minor repairs, informing appropriate supervision.
- Must be able to work outdoors occasionally and perform physical labor including occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds in a safe manner.
- Responsible to help maintain safe and healthful working conditions by exercising sound judgment, complying with all industry safety regulations and standards.
- Will need to keep current with changing industry regulations and standards, while being willing to learn new and changing technologies for possible implementation.
- Incumbent must have and maintain a good attitude and be very patient to be successful in this role.
- Must maintain valid driver’s license for the state of residence.
- Must be able to obtain a Federal Government issued TWIC card.
- Internal non-qualified bidders must be able to pass a skills test.
- The successful bidder must be able to be contacted by telephone and will make his/her home in the vicinity of the permanent work location to be available for call-out and emergency assignment.
